Jeff Snow’s Celtic Music School Program is designed to dovetail with and enhance
school curriculum requirements while being an exciting way to engage students in
a meaningful learning experience. The Celtic Music Program recognizes that students all share "multiple intelligences," music being one of the most powerful mediums. This program supports those learners by blending music and story-telling with creative writing. Regionally recognized Celtic musician, Jeff has worked with professional educators to create a program that can address the classroom MCAS requirements for Massachusetts schools at the Middle and High School levels. This program has been also well-received in upper grades in Elementary Schools looking to enrich their classroom experiences. On special request, Jeff is also willing to work with educators to tailor the experience to the teacher's/ student's/school's specific needs. One of the program's most popular and educationally significant elements is the "Kilkelly Ireland" component. This Celtic song is based upon a series of actual letters from an Irish family writing to their son in America over a period of 35 years. After performing this piece, Jeff then leads the class in an interactive discussion of the social and historical issues revealed in the song. The students are then given one of the letters and are given the task of writing a meaningful response. The students participating in this program have enjoyed the learning process. The exercise of writing, learning new vocabulary and using their imaginations has proven to be a powerful way to engage the student’s attention and interest in an interactive educational experience. As another method for preparing for mandated tests, students gain another means of responding to a story (in this case conveyed through music) that prepares them to examine the challenging texts on the MCAS exams. The event runs 50 minutes, it can be expanded or contracted to fit the needs of your school, and can be presented to groups of any size..
